Vehicle Description

Rare 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Project

By the 1950s, Maserati had already built a strong reputation in international motorsport thanks to numerous racing victories. To strengthen its financial position, the brand decided to shift focus toward series production. This led to the creation of its very first production model in 1957: the Maserati 3500 GT. It marked a major milestone for the company and proved to be a commercial success. Despite being Maserati’s first mass-produced model, it remained highly exclusive — only 2,226 examples were built between 1957 and 1964.

Although the 3500 GT was designed for road use, every detail reveals its racing DNA. The bodywork was designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera of Milan, using a lightweight tubular frame and aluminum panels to reduce weight. This specific 1960 example features front disc brakes and a limited-slip differential. Maserati collaborated with top European manufacturers for key components: the four-speed manual transmission came from ZF in Germany, and the suspension was supplied by Alford & Alder in the UK.

The engine of the 3500 GT was derived from the Maserati 350S, the race car driven by Stirling Moss in the 1956 Mille Miglia. While modified for street use with improved reliability and comfort, the performance remained impressive. The result: a 3.5-liter all-aluminum inline-six with dual overhead camshafts and three Weber carburetors, producing 220 hp. Thanks to its low weight and sporty setup, the 3500 GT was among the fastest production cars of its era.

The example on offer was delivered new in the United States in April 1960. It later was with an owner in Belgium for several years before it came to the present owner. A few years ago a restoration was started and much work has already been done on a high level.

As shown in the photos, the bodywork is now in excellent condition: fully restored and repainted in a beautiful dark grey color with a cognac-colored leather interior, ready for final assembly. The project is largely complete, rolling, and requires no welding or paintwork. Some engine components and the bumpers are missing. The car comes with a U.S. title and the original build sheet.
